Treating a Migraine

In some extreme cases a person might need to see a doctor and be prescribed a stronger medication for use when migraines attack. Fortunately, there are simple, tried and true methods that most people can use to treat a migraine at home.
As soon as one suspects a migraine coming on, take the smallest effective dose of a painkiller like Advil or Tylenol. Don’t overload your system with these drugs as this can lead to other problems such as ulcers and decreased sensitivity over time. Instead, start with the lowest suggested dose listed on the package, and increase incrementally every half hour if you need to.
Then, make sure to spend time in a private room with no or little light, sound, or smell. Close doors and windows to minimize input. Once the headache begins to take root, even the mildest stimulation will aggravate it. Calm, peace, and quiet is what you need to let the headache melt away and evaporate, instead of intensify.
Make sure to wear soft, loose, breathable clothing if possible. You will want to stay warm but not too hot. Avoid all extremes in this situation. Prepare a hot compress, and then lie under a light blanket with the compress on your forehead or the back of your neck. This is to relax tension in the muscles of the face and head, and also to increase the flow of clean, oxygenated blood to the region. You may find that the warmth helps you to relax overall and, if you’re lucky, you’ll fall asleep until the pain goes away.
